Quick Take

Use 15g of medium-fine coffee and 225g of water at 185 to 200°F. Pour, stir, steep for 1 to 2 minutes, then press slowly for about 30 seconds. The AeroPress is forgiving, so adjust grind and steep time to taste.

The AeroPress has a loyal following because it is small, durable, nearly impossible to break, and very forgiving. It makes a clean, smooth cup that sits between a pour-over and an espresso in strength, and you can make it almost anywhere.

What You Need

An AeroPress, paper filters, a scale, a kettle, a timer, and a grinder. A thin spoon or paddle for stirring helps too. Like any brew method, measuring in grams gives you a cup you can repeat.

A Simple Starting Recipe

1. Prep

Place a paper filter in the cap, rinse it with hot water, and attach the cap to the chamber. Set the AeroPress on a sturdy mug.

2. Add coffee and water

Add 15g of medium-fine ground coffee, then pour in 225g of water at 185 to 200°F (85 to 93°C), starting the timer as you pour.

3. Stir and steep

Stir for about 10 seconds to wet all the grounds, then let it steep until the 1 to 2 minute mark.

4. Press

Insert the plunger and press down slowly over about 30 seconds. Stop when you hear a hiss, which means the water has run through and only air is left.

The AeroPress rewards experimenting. Change one thing at a time and you will find your cup fast.

What to Adjust

If the cup tastes sour or thin, grind finer or steep a little longer. If it tastes bitter, grind coarser or shorten the steep. For a stronger, more concentrated cup, use less water and dilute with hot water afterward, which is how many people make an Americano-style drink. Our grind size guide has a quick note on where AeroPress fits, and the ratio guide shows how to scale the recipe.

The Myth: You Need a Championship Recipe

AeroPress competitions have produced dozens of complicated recipes, but you do not need any of them. A basic recipe gives a great cup, and the method works with a wide range of grind sizes and steep times. Start simple and change things only when you taste something you want to fix.

A scale, spare filters, and a good grinder are all you need for consistent AeroPress coffee.
